Phragmipedium's
are a very unusual species. Although closesly related to paphiopedilums,
Phrags as they are called by hobbyists are unique in that they have
longer more slender dark green leaves and tend to prefer to be slightly
more wet than paphopedilums.
Most
Phrags come from South America and all varieties are from tropical
places. Phragmipediums are often reffered to as Lady slippers, and
can be grown easily in a home or greenhouse condition.
A close
cousin to the phragmipedium is the cyperpedium species that are
found in the colder climates such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
Although they are colder growing, their flowers have a close resemblence
to that of the phragmipediums of the tropical areas.
